Winster and Blakelow Hill

After missing a couple of walks its good to be back. It was my turn to drive and there were 5 of us this week, the usual culprits plus Sally, Geoff's daughter. We set off at 06:00 and parked up in the top car park in Winster. After getting booted up we headed down into the village and soon found the footpath we were looking for. It was a steady incline through pastures, and scrub land. This area around Winster is cover in spoil heaps from old lead mine workings, capped mine shafts from the industrial past. We were heading for the trig point on Blakelow Hill The footpaths took us most of the way with a little off track for the final few hundred yards to get to the trig point. The views from the top were magnificent all around, being able to pick out Chatsworth House, Stanton Moor and Minninglow. We had our breakfast there then started the decent on a different route back towards Winster. We passed an old capped mine called the Beans and Bacon Mine what a brilliant name. A nice slow walk back to the car park again with lovely views.

This weeks route around Winster

Style in the middle of the field but no wall

Getting close ups of the flowers

Old lead mine shaft. The Bacon and Beans Mine

Tight squeeze

A brilliant walk today just over 4 miles on a route that none of us has been on. Some lovely views over the Derbyshire countryside. I'm sure some of these old stone styles are getting narrower or is it me getting bigger lol

  1. Looks like a good route for a short walk, although I think I'd prefer it in winter when the cows are less likely to be in the fields.
