Pea Low & Alstonefield

Another 07:30 start today with Geoff driving and we set off through Ashbourne and up to Alstonefield. After seeing the art rock on Gardoms Edge last week Geoff wanted to have a look at one of the many round barrows that are in the Peak District. This one is called Pea Low and is one of the largest. We parked up in the Village Hall car park and just waked a few hundred yards until we got to the footpath that took us through a farm. The farmer gave us directions and said i think you'll get a bit muddy today and he wasn't kidding!!! We started out in reasonable conditions but when we got to the top of the hill at the barrow it was blowing a gale and chucking it down. It got that bad i even put my camera away for a while. We didn't hang around much and headed over the fields to the old track and then back down to the village.

Pea Low is one of the largest round barrows in the Peak District at 3.5m high by 45x38m. Two dry stone walls cross it. Excellent views in all directions including Gratton Hill, Narrowdale Hill and Wetton Hill all of which have barrows at their summits.
Although we got a bit muddy, wet and blasted with the wind and rain this was still an interesting walk, one to repeat in better weather.
See you next week.

  1. There's a new bus service starting in March going to this part of the Peak District and i'm looking forward to visiting many of the places you feature in the blog - Alstonefield looks particularly attractive.
