Burbage Edge and Burbage Rocks

It was Ike's turn this week and we decided to go up to Burbage Edge to see the heather before it gets past its best. We first stopped outside the bottom end of the Longshaw estate and took a couple of pics towards Higger tor and Carl Wark. We then headed up to the car park at Upper Burbage Bridge. The morning weather was fantastic with the low sun blinding us. Even Geoff hadn't been on the edge so it was a first for all of us. We decided to walk along the top edge going towards Toadmouth Bridge and return on the lower path past a couple of the old quarries.

These two prominent gritstone 

outcrops guard the western 

edge of the Burbage Valley. 

Carl Wark is topped with the 

remains of what is thought to be 

a Bronze or Iron Age hill fort.

The Burbage Valley is a basin partly surrounded by 

scarps or edges of gritstone Rocks and Minerals with 

Burbage Rocks to the east and Higger Tor and Carl Wark 

to the west. The rocks were formed in a period geologists call 

the Carboniferous (around 360–300 million years ago).

This gritstone edge runs for 

nearly two miles along the 

eastern side of the valley. It 

is one of the most popular 

rock climbing areas in the Peak District.

Back at the car park

This is a cracking walk only 3 3/4 miles but in my opinion the most stunning scenery of all the edges.
The first time any of us had been there but it wont be the last.
