Cutthroat Bridge and Ladybower

An early start today 06:00 BST it was still dark but not to cold. We zoomed up to Cutthroat Bridge and got parked in the lay by there at about 07:10 with just a lorry parked there. We got booted up and walked down to the Cutthroat Bridge and up onto the Derwent moor. It was Ike's idea to go up there in the hope of seeing some mountain hares. Well we didn't get very far before we saw 2 feeding near the heather. We had only been walking for about 20 minutes when our Rob spotted them, they were a long way off but i managed to get a couple of pics before they disappeared. We had a walk to Whinstone Lee before heading back around the rim above Ladybower Wood. We stopped for breakfast overlooking Ladybower, what a view. Then it was a slow walk back to the car .

Cutthroat Bridge

Around 400 years ago a man was discovered in Highshaw Clough (locally pronounced Eashaw Clough) with his throat cut. A local man, Robert Ridge along with two others took the victim to Bamford Hall where he dies two days later.

In more recent times (December 1995) a Sheffield man Anthony Antoniou and two accomplices beheaded Antoniou’s own stepfather Walter McCarthy then dumped the body at Cutthroat Bridge and burying the head in Bedfordshire. Antoniou was the lover of pop singer Gabrielle,

This was a cracking walk in good sunny weather. We saw the mountain hares although a long way off and also saw Grouse, a Curlew and a Kestrel.
