Baslow and the Golden Gates of Chatsworth

It was Rob’s turn to drive today and we had a good laugh before we even got into the car. We put all our backpacks in and we each always take a separate carrier bag with our boots or shoes in so that when we get back from the walk we can swap our dirty boots for clean shoes to go in the car. Well we put our stuff in but when Ike went to put his carrier bag in he discovered it was full of ….. wait for it….. potato peelings.  We set off after he went back for his boots.  With the ground still being very soggy we thought we would try and stick to hard surfaces so we opted for a ramble around  Baslow and into the back end of Chatsworth Park.  We parked opposite the weir on Bubnell Lane then walked  into Baslow via the old Baslow toll bridge. We went up School Lane to the green and then down Eaton Hill across the A619 , past the Malt House and over the Bar Brook bridge. /the footpath from there takes us into Chatsworth Park. There was a very interesting revolving kissing gate and we then went onto the roadway which lead us up to the fabulous Golden gates of Chatsworth. From there we turned around and headed back the same way we came. We stopped off at the green next to the main car park and had our breakfast sitting comfortably on a bench for a change. Then back to the car with a couple of minor interruptions to the route. Rob had found a way down to the river bank to get a better shot of the old mill and weir.

This was a cracking 3 mile walk, bit chilly but at least we were dry. A couple of surprises in Baslow and lots of really big old houses.
See you next week.
