Disappearing Nutbrook and the Erewash Canal

Just 3 of us this week and Ike's turn to drive and with the Chatsworth horse trials on we definitely didn't want to go north. Geoff wanted to see if we could find where the Nutbrook canal disappeared underground. Geoff had got an old map with rivers, canals and railway tracks on so we set off and parked up in exactly the same spot that we had last week. We took a different route to get onto the footpath leading down to the Nutbrook Canal, from there the footpath was along the old railway track and we kept looking to see where the water disappeared. After tramping through some dense undergrowth Geoff eventually found it, he calls it a syphon and it looks quite a lot of new steelwork has gone up with the original old stone/brickwork behind it. It was just a straight forward walk along the footpath and road back to the car but we met a couple of interesting folk on the way. We met this chap on the riverbank casting a line into the river but on the end of the line he had a very strong magnet and he was pulling all sorts of metal bits out of the water. He told us a friend had pulled an old pistol from the river. Further around on the way back we came across a house with a blue plaque dedicated to Oswald Short the Aeronautical engineer of Short Brothers fame. We got back to the car and carried on up the canal to find somewhere for our breakfast and we bumped into Ian and his dog Jack that we saw last week. We had a good natter then back to the car and home.

Lovely fishing spot.
We had a lovely walk just under 4 1/2 miles and met a couple of interesting characters. The weather was just perfect for walking and thoroughly enjoyed it.
See you next week.
