Mam Tor in the Mist

Robs turn this week and we set off at 06:00 and straight up the A6 and parked up at the bus stop at Mam Tor. When we set off it was misty and 0 degrees, we passed through clear patches and misty patches with temperatures down to -2 degrees. From the car we walked around to start of the footpath and from there it was a slog uphill over 200 feet to the trig point. With the cloud inversion the views were to die for absolutely fantastic.I mentioned on the way in the car that there would probably be a few photographers up there early for the sun rise. Well there were still one or two about and some had got their shots and gone home. Of those we spoke to some had to get up at 03:30 and were travelling from all over the place, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire and locally based Sheffield. We had a couple of stops going up to catch our breath and take in the scene, there was still a lot of frost about and even a sprinkle of overnight snow. We slowly made our way down towards Hollins Cross and stopped to have our breakfast on Barker Bank which is nestling under Back Tor. Earlier on the walk our Rob had mentioned the lads that we have bumped into over the last few years that come from Sheffield. We were having our breakfast and heard a shout it was them, well two of them, big Mick and his mate. Its incredible to think that we come from Belper and they are from Sheffield yet we keep bumping into each other in remote parts of Derbyshire. After we had a banter we started back towards the car. We chatted to an oriental chap with his camera set up on a tripod looking towards Peveril Castle waiting for the mist to clear and four girls looked like they were doing there D of E award scheme. We made a detour on the way back which cut out the climb to the trig point and the footpath lead us straight back to the car.

 This was a great walk with stunning landscape all around. We saw a couple of Skylarks, a big hare and heard a Green Woodpecker calling in the woods nearby. Just over 3 miles in total but ascending and descending several hundred feet. Roll on next week.
